Whilst the Braemar is not the poshest of cruise ships afloat, it does attract an older, very traditional type of person who still believes in dressing up for formal nights. My advice would be to wear whatever you are happiest in. Some ladies feel "overdressed" in a long ball gown, while others are more than happy to dress to impress! Obviously if money is a bit on the tight side after splashing out on the cruise, then a cocktail dress is a bit more practical for future use, but if you intend to cruise again, then something a bit special might be in order? Don't forget that, depending on the length of the cruise, there may be two or more formal nights whilst you are on board. You wont want to wear the same dress twice, so maybe you could find room for both types in your wardrobe? I'm sure that you will look stunning which ever you choose! I hope that you have a fantastic first cruise. Happy cruising.
Hi, I've travelled on all the ships in the Fred Olsen fleet apart from Braemar and I too am looking forward to a cruise on her in September after she's been 'stretched'. Most passengers adhere to the dress code on Fred ships with ladies wearing either long or cocktail dresses on formal nights. The brochure states: 'On 'Formal' evenings, gentlemen will prefer to wear 'black tie' with ladies elegantly dressed in cocktail or evening dress. As a guideline there are usually four formal nights on a two week cruise'. On a recent cruise on Balmoral there was quite a mixture of styles on formal nights, gentlemen wearing either DJ's or dark suits and some in kilts. Some ladies wore evening dresses, others cocktail dresses or long skirts with sparkly tops. A tip for evening wear at reasonable prices is T K Maxx, usually a good selection of long and cocktail dresses, also Debenhams if you're not working to a budget. Successful shopping, enjoy Braemar and have a great cruise! Regards Jan .
The answer is both but I hope a lady correspondent will confirm the detail.
Been on the Braemar and no one seemed to wear long dresses or cocktail,It was my first cruise and I didnt wear either.Just a summer dress or black trousers and top and this seemed to be the norm.Dont think Fred Olsens ships are like some of the larger cruise lines.
